This prison was built during the British colonial period (1870-1876). The grounds of the prison were created by filling in the Bogambara Wewa (an artificial lake) and the buildings were designed by F. Vine of the Public Works Department of Ceylon. The design of the main gate and walls are said to be inspired by the Bastille.
Prison was relocated to Pallekele (one of the Kandy suburbs)
between 2013 and 2014. Presently the premises is being redeveloped a s a
cultural park. However the property remains underutilized at this stage. (From
