Artist Monica Bonvicini has created a minimalist glass cube containing a usable loo to stand opposite the Tate Britain gallery in London (Photo 2). The work, called Don't Miss A Sec, is made out of one-way glass which means you can see out but not in.

The toilet was also exhibited at the Messeplatz in Basel, Switzerland (photos 1,3)

SLIA annual sessions and the exhibition

SLIA Annual Sessions and the Exhibition 'Architect 2011' will be held at the BMICH from Feb 23rd to 27th 2011.
Actually the so called"sessions" consist of;
      Inauguration - Exactly that! - 23rd
      Exhibition - Architect 2011 - 23rd to 27th
     National Conference - Architecture for all: City + Community - 24th
     AGM - (members only) - 
    Fellowship Night - zzzzzzzz - 26th

Here is the SLIA site, but if you are looking for the schedule of events don't go there, it wont tell you! Neither does the separate web page for the Exhibition as it takes ages to load. But if you are a 'flash' fan definitely worth a visit!. Call the SLIA, that is the best.

This time the theme is "Architecture for all: City + Community"

My mate Narein has highlighted the remarkable similarities between these two sets of structures; temporary pavillion at the Serpentine Gallery by Jean Nouvel and the 2009 SLIA Exhibition structures, especially the members stall. Remember that  the SLIA Exhibition came before Jean Nouvel's structure.

more details of Jean Nouvel's Pavillion at Serpentine Gallery could be seen  here.  As this an annual event, there are a series of pavillions designed by prominent architects. Oscar Niemeyer would have been in his late nineties when he desinged the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion in 2003. Not bad at all! Vida longa, Oscar.

CAA students competition

Here are a few pics from the exhibition of the CAA (Commonwealth Association of Architects) student competition winners, which was organized as part of the CAA conference which was held in Colombo recently. Alas, there were no participants, lest winners from Sri Lanka for this competition!

rethinking sustainability (SLIA exhibition 2010)

Here is my belated entry on SLIA 'Sessions' this year!

SLIA (Sri Lanka Institute of Architects for those ignorants!) has its annual sessions which include the exhibitions, annual sessions and the AGM, this year, well all over Colombo. Yes, the usual venue BMICH was under renovations and apparently there is no other single venue where SLIA could herd all these events together. To make the matters even more complicated CAA (Commonwealth Association of Architects) annual conference was also held concurrently with these events.

The theme this year was "Rethinking Sustainability". With the global recession, most of us architects, for the last few years have been thinking about nothing but sustainability as there was nothing much else to do. So this is a very comforting and reassuring theme as it kindly reminds us it is time to 'rethink' of the same! By the way last year it was "doing less with more".

Well, jokes apart, there were a couple of very relevant and impressive presentations at the conference this year. For me the most impressive was  by the Bangladeshi architects Md. Rafiq Azam of SHATOTTO. (its worth checking his website out)

two brothers living on a wall in rio de janeiro

Two brothers in Rio are living over the edge — literally: sleeping, working and eating on the side of a building 33 feet up in the air. They've attached to a bright red-and-yellow wall as part of an art exhibit in Rio's old center. (news item thanks to my mate chithaka)
